ANGEL NEXT DOOR

EPISODE 1

“So you’re not going for the fellowship?”
“Yes,”
“Remind me why,”
“I don’t know. I just don’t feel up to it.”
The smart quip I was expecting did not come. I opened my eyes from where I was sprawled on my bed.Β
“You’re cool with it?”
“Have you asked the Holy Spirit?” He said in a low, rough voice. Yeah, I’ll be blessed if he was cool with it.
“You and I both know that He’ll tell me to go. So why would I ask Him when I already know the answerΒ
and I ain’t willing to obey it? I don’t want to be disobedient.”
“If I get it right, you mean by not asking, you don’t get to have instructions to disobey in the firstΒ
instance? You are using ignorance as an excuse for disobedience?”
I laughed and clapped for him. “Man, you are one brilliant angel. My law brain must be rubbing off onΒ
you already.” It’s been a little over two years — the year I got baptized in the Spirit– since his first visit toΒ
I and he already understand my thought process. Not an easy feat.
He too chuckled but for a different reason, I’d soon learn.Β
“ignorant Juris non-excusat.” He pronounced each word slowly and deliberately. “Ignorance of the lawΒ
is no excuse.” That table turned on me pretty fast. “Remember that Scripture that says, ‘my peopleΒ
perish for they lack knowledge?’ ”Β
“Argh! You are worse than my mother.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you. It means I’m doing my job excellently well.” Such a gloater!
“I’ve never seen the part of the Bible that says angels should nag!”
“You’re a special assignment,”
“But–”
“Do not forsake the gathering of the brethren. I was glad when they said unto me, let us go to the houseΒ
of the Lord. In the presence of God, there is fullness of joy.”

“Okay, okay, I’m getting up. I’ll go. Jeez!”
I felt more than saw him sigh and shake his head. I promise this one angel is a case.
“Today’s service is going to be awesome.” I heard the inner witness say as I threw my shoulder bag over
my shoulders and locked my door. Today’s service is going to be awesome.

The fellowship was deep in worship when I entered the Dome. Great! I was late. I hate being late. Not
starting with the ten minutes pre-prayers always threw me off balance. But here I am, returning the
smile of the kind student who ushered me in and struggling to settle down and join in the worship. Yes,
yes, it’s all my fault.
The service progressed quickly. Quite sadly. Here was a place where I forgot who I was and all the
baggage of a human heart for a couple of hours. Here was a place I knew I was wanted and not
condemned. I was good enough to be in the presence of God and every word coming out of the altar
was spoken because God has enough interest to want to speak to me. Thank God for His grace!
It was comforting. A part of me still fretted about the crowd around me, and whether I laughed too
loudly or not. But there was a greater peace and joy that refreshed my spirit. And that was okay.
I felt faith bubbling in my heart as the service progressed. It was no problem connecting when it was
time to pray. My heart was opened. By the time we finished, I was not among those still slain in the
Spirit on the floor or wiping dirt off their body after getting up. Weird. I almost quirked my eyebrow.
I usually fell under the power pretty easily and hadn’t the inner witness said the service was going to be
awesome? So why didn’t I fall?
“Since when did your falling define the awesomeness of a meeting?” my spirit chastised.
Right. What I’ve received is by faith, not by–
“My babyyyyyyyy!!!” An all too familiar voice screeched before long slender hands circled my waist from
behind.
We’d barely even finished the family song before this one came screaming. She rocked me to and fro.
“I’ve missed youuuuuuu,”
“Who be dis?” I replied.
“Abeg, abeg. No hard girl today.” The hug got tighter the more I fought to disentangle myself. “I’ve not
seen you for over five days. Almost a week guy!”

“Ife, we video-called yesterday.”
“Not the same guy.” She was almost groaning now. I laughed. The truth is I missed Ife’s whining too. ButΒ
Jesus will come before I admit that to her face.
“Yay! Group hug.” Another hugger, Margaret, came slamming into us. I felt the air being knocked out ofΒ
my lungs. Oh, Jesus.
Don’t get me wrong, after-service hugs are one of my favourite parts of CLASFON meetings. It was anΒ
unsaid culture; you hugged, shook hands, exchanged pleasantries with any and everyone after theΒ
family song. It was comforting and very welcoming since most of us only see once a week, thanks toΒ
virtual classes. But a combination of Margaret, the hug-queen and Ife, the chief whiner on me at onceΒ
didn’t do well for my no-touch skin.
“Um–” I managed to get my head out. “Ife, aren’t you supposed to be arranging chairs or something,”
“Dang, Jerry’s going to kill me.” She fled to the back of the hall where chairs were already being stacked.
And that guys, is how you disperse a group hug.Β
By the time I was done with greeting friends and acquaintances, I knew there was no way in heck I wasΒ
going to get a bus back to my place at Ajibode. Fat chance I’d get a drop tricycle to get me to AjibodeΒ
gate too. I was going to have to leg it.Β
I gave another person my last hug for the night and fished out my earpiece from my bag. What’s it goingΒ
to be tonight? Maverick City’s Jireh or Sia’s Unstoppable. I settled on Pastor Iren’s Zoe. I’d justΒ
downloaded it but haven’t had the time to listen to it yet. The cool breeze of the night called for newΒ
music so I put it on.
The lyrics went straight to my spirit.
This life that I have
Is the life of God in me
This life that I have
Is the life of Christ…
It reminded me of Galatians 2:20. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives inΒ
me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself forΒ
me.Β
Awesome!!! I set out on my one kilometre + X journey back to my room.

Angel G-R12 moved forward as the cherubim before he finished his brief with the Lord. He’d almostΒ
missed what the Presence felt like– glorious, utterly beautiful and breathtakingly refreshing. The longerΒ
he spent in that verminous world, the more he burnt out. But this time he was an angel with a mission.Β
A mission to fill every part of his being with as much holiness and goodness as possible. So help him, God.Β
The fragrance from the Incense of Praise helped soothe his burnout. Surely, he was the first Angel toΒ
experience burnout. Oh, if only he could request a duty change. The only reason he endured thisΒ
the assignment was because the Lord knew he was capable, that was why he had assigned him to such aΒ
humongous strength-sapping task.
“Ah yes, Angel,” the voice of the Lord came like a gentle wind, carrying with it the scent of sweetΒ
fragrances and songs of times. “How is Mirian?”
“First of all, my Lord, I’d like to say this. You do not pay me enough for this!”Β
Every Seraphim in the throne room took a pause. You could hear a pin drop loud and clear in the silence.
“I need a raise!” Angel G-R12 continued, undaunted.Β
Young cherubim could not hold back his laughter. He tried to cover it with a cough but his fellowsΒ
joined in quiet sniggering. G-R12 was at it again. He’d been having screws loose ever since his latestΒ
assignment.
“A raise of what?” the Lord asked.
He stopped to think. A raise of what? He was an angel, a being created and dedicated solely to theΒ
service of the Highest. Angels were not paid for their work. They’re spirit beings for goodness sake.Β
He must have stayed on Earth for too long this time, forgetting that he was an angel and not anΒ
overworked salary earner. He buried his face in his palm.
“I don’t know my Lord. But the girl is driving me to the gates of hell! She doesn’t respect my divinity.Β
Talks back to me. Doesn’t listen to a word I say but goes ahead to do what she’s not supposed to do andΒ
then come back to say it’s all my fault–”
“That’s enough, Angel.” The Lord cut in.
“But, my Lord, I haven’t even gotten started–”
“My daughter will not be condemned, Angel. Not for anything. Or my death will be for nothing.”
“Yes, my Lord.” He sighed. Those humans always escaped quite alright

Selah
“There is no condemnation for my little ones.”
“Yes, my Lord.”
“I am happy to see that she is growing. Continue to keep her toes from hitting the stones,”
“Yes, my Lord.”
“You can go back,”
“N-Now, my Lord?” Whoa, what about his little break?
“Yes. Their koinonia is over,”
Yes, the girl had just received an abundance of grace but what about him and his tired wings?! “But, my
Lord?”
“Go now, Angel. I don’t want her walking alone on that road.”
Just as he turned back to return to the earth in despair, he remembered that he had warned her to stop
walking alone in the night on that dark road.

To be continued…
